Besides the fact that puff pastry is glorious simply because it is flaky, buttery heaven, puff pastry is a fantastic food to have stocked in the freezer because it’s a quick ticket to numerous easy desserts.
Today’s recipe only uses 3 ingredients: puff pastry, chocolate hazelnut spread such as Nutella, and fresh strawberries. Anyone can make it. Yes, anyone!
Even though it only has 3 ingredients, these 3 ingredients form a trinity of flavors that go really well with one another. The fresh strawberries love the chocolate in the hazelnut spread and, well, I guess actually puff pastry loves pretty much everything when it comes to flavor.
The layers of flaky dough provide the perfect base to top with smooth hazelnut spread and slices of strawberry.
To get started, thaw a sheet of frozen puff pastry. Then unfold it and score a border all around the edges using a sharp knife. You don’t want to cut all the way down to the bottom, just cut a little bit. This will allow the edge to rise more and give you a crust for the tart.
Take a fork and dock the inner portion of the puff pastry very thoroughly. This keeps the center portion from rising as much as it usually does.
The next step is optional, but I like to brush the edges with a beaten egg so I get a really pretty golden color. It will still taste good without it, but what can I say, I like the color and sheen of an egg wash!
Bake the puff pastry in the oven for about 15 minutes, until the edges look beautifully golden. If you want the center portion to be a little more golden, you can bake for another 3 minutes.
Now take a spatula and gently press down the middle portion of the puff pastry, to separate it from the crust.
Spread the interior of the puff pastry with chocolate hazelnut spread. I find it easiest to use an icing spatula for this.
Slice up a few strawberries, and lay them in a single layer on top of the chocolate hazelnut spread.
Now the tart is ready to be sliced and served! I kid you not, when I make this, it does not even last 10 minutes. It’s simple but delicious. Enjoy!
